Q&A: Rain rot and weight lose

By Blog Answers at 01/15/09 16:53

On 08/24/08 20:19, shelly asked the following question:

can a severe case of rain rot cause weight lose?

Answer #1 On 01/15/09 13:29, Alex from Clarion, PA answered:

Rain rot is typically not associated with weight loss in horses.  Your horse may be feeling uncomfortable due to the rain rot so it is possible that he is not eating normally, but more likely there is another condition causing the weight loss.  Pay attention to how he eats and consult a veterinarian.  Your vet will know how to properly assess your situation and will have suggestions about how to alleviate the rain rot and determine the source of the weight loss in your horse.

We recently had a horse with severe rain rot on his legs and belly, he has lost a lot of weight and also has a swollen sheath. Blood tests showed incorrect levels of protein in the blood, indicating that the system is depleted of protein and is taking protein from muscle tissue to compensate. Our vet advised that this protein imbalance is responsible for the sudden weight loss, and is most likely to be caused by the rain rot. She says this is not uncommon, but other factors can be responsible as well, so contact your vet to rule out other causes.
