I have always loved to sketch drawings from life since I was a little girl. I would sit down in the pasture with my horse, Peanut Butter, and draw him as he was grazing. Over the years, I accumulated many drawings of various horses, almost as a chronicle of my life as a horse owner. From doing all of those drawings, I became very aware of each horse's particular anatomy. Each horse had a different composition and it was facinating for me to compare and contrast. It wasn't until my current horse, Jack, came up lame that I acutally started to compare these drawings. Like my past horses, I had many sketches of Jack. I was looking throught them one day after he came up lame and I noticed that his right hind leg was different than any other horse I had ever drawn. It was very subtle, and I didn't notice unitl I compared it to the shading of my other drawings. I have several cats that take care of the barn mice for me. They do a wonderful job and I rarely see any evidence of the little guys around. When I do though, it seems like they pop up in the strangest places. Like one Christmas, we decorated the barn around the office area and I actually found a mouse under our christmas tree skirt. And the silliest place I ever found a mouse in the barn was in my grooming vacuum cleaner. I have a great grooming vac that allows me to get the dust out of my horses coat. Well it apparently made a good home for a mouse too. I had just taken the vacuum out for the beginning of show season and luckily for the mouse I decided to check the bag. He was curled up inside! I have a friend that just is too short to stand to reach her 17 hand horse's mane to braid it for shows. I suggested that she get a stool so she can sit right there. She got an adjustable height stool so she could use it for other things and she absolutely loves it!She used to have to stand on her tip toes to reach him but now she can sit right beside him to braid his mane. He has a lot of hair so it keeps her from getting too tired as well. She did make sure it was lightweight though so she could move it quickly if necessary. It was a great addition to her grooming arsenal. Who know that a stool could be so functional in the barn. Tags: grooming • braiding • horse hair • barn supplies • 0 Comments. - Permalink |

I was recently reading the magazine, Cosmopolitan and came across something that really struck me as unusual. Most times in the fashion section of these magazines are french or maybe modern contemporary inspired clothing, but this month there were riding boots. Yes, riding boots. For all of us horse women this just means we will be reaching into our vast stores of horsey clothes and we will be up on the latest fashion. There were even some photos with the plaid shirts that are so cowgirl inspired and some skinny jeans that were similarly colored to tan breeches and tucked into some knee high black boots. For as long as I have been riding, I have been a cowgirl. Barrels, poles, team penning, that kind of stuff. Well, I am about to step into a world that I know nothing about.I am joining the Equestrian Team at my school which primarily does English riding. I have never sat my cowgirl butt in an English saddle let alone ride a horse over fences and such. But, even though I am inexperienced, I am very excited for the experience.
