Barrel racing is ever increasing in popularity among girls and even us old women! I will tell you it is not for the faint of heart at times. If you can imagine riding a thousand pound animal tearing around a cloverleaf pattern in an arena, unsure of the footing, unsure of what your horse is feeling...
It is exhilarating, at the very least. The more you are in tune with your equine athlete, the more he will take care of business and the less work you have to do. A finished barrel horse definitely knows his job and performs accordingly.
It is the journey of you and your horse together that I think is so special. Especially when you take a novice horse and a novice rider and turn them into a spectacular pair.
This is what it is all about, you and the relationship with your horse. Just take a look at these images from some of the memories of barrel racers all over. Look at the pictures, look at the way the riders move their bodies with their horses. They make it look so very easy.
I will personally assure you, it is definitely NOT! It is hard, dusty, repetitive work to bring a novice horse and rider to a competitive level.
